What is an owl pellet? When an owl eats, it swallows it’s prey whole. The undigested parts like bones are held in the bird’s glandular stomach and then regurgitated as a “pellet”. Scientists examine the pellets to determine the owl’s diet.

Students love to explore owl pellets and reconstruct the skeletons they find inside. These pellets have been collected by a biology supply company that bakes them to make them safe for student use. We have included links to several websites where you can print out diagrams, bone matching charts, and information to make your dissection truly exciting and educational.
